Homemade Fruit Leather

Homemade Fruit Leather – Strawberry Kiwi

Homemade Fruit LeatherOne of the easiest things you can make in the dehydrator is homemade fruit leather. And not only is it easy to make, it is also super delicious and much more nutritious than most store bought fruit leather and fruit roll ups. I mean, have you looked at the ingredient list for those things? Fruit juice concentrate and corn syrup are often the top two ingredients. Yuck. And since homemade fruit leather is so simple to make in your food dehydrator, there is no reason not to make your own.

There are a million different combinations of homemade fruit leather that you can create, but today I am going to show you how to make super easy and super delicious strawberry kiwi homemade fruit leather to use for backpacking, hiking or just as a healthy snack in your regular life. But if you think you’d like to try making it with other fruits, go at it. You can use this technique with any combination of fruit you prefer. More often than not I use fresh fruit when making homemade fruit leather in the dehydrator. And because you puree the whole mixture, this is the perfect way to use up bruised or slightly overripe fruit that you have on hand. In fact, I often check out the discount section of my local produce store to find cheaper fruit to use in my homemade fruit leather making it an economical snack too. Bananas, cantaloupe, mangoes, berries and so on all make delicious combinations.

You can also use frozen fruit to make homemade fruit leather, which is nice when it’s winter time and in-season produce is harder to obtain. Just make sure to fully thaw and drain the frozen fruit before pureeing it. Otherwise your mixture will be very runny and take much longer to dehydrate. Don’t throw it our though- you can use this leftover juice to flavor sparkling water or even champagne!

The strawberry kiwi homemade fruit leather shown here is made with a mixture of frozen strawberries and fresh kiwis since that is what I had and also one of our favorite combinations. Sweetened with just a tiny bit of local honey, this three ingredient snack is not only nutritious, it is very delicious.

3. Blend until smooth.

4. Pour onto fruit roll sheets that work with the dehydrator you are using. (I use these Fruit Roll Sheets with a Nesco Food Dehydrator)Homemade Fruit Leather Strawberry KiwiHomemade Fruit Leather Strawberry Kiwi

5. Dehydrate the fruit mixture at 140 degrees for 6-8 hours or until totally dehydrated.Homemade Fruit Leather Strawberry Kiwi

6. Check occasionally to see how “dry” your fruit is. You want it be slightly sticky, but not wet. If you let it get too dry, it will be more like fruit bark than fruit leather. Still tasty, but maybe not what you were trying to make!

7. Peel the fruit leather from the fruit roll sheets and cut into slices with a pizza cutter.Homemade Fruit Leather Strawberry KiwiHomemade Fruit LeatherHomemade Fruit Leather

8. Roll them up and enjoy! You can wrap your homemade fruit leather into sheets of wax paper if desired.Homemade Fruit Leather

See how easy that is? Healthy, delicious and much less expensive than the store bought version, homemade fruit leather is the perfect snack to take hiking, backpacking or to enjoy anytime. Click for a free printable version of this recipe.

Thanks for sharing this awesome, nutritious and simple 3 ingredient recipe. I love the touch of local honey in there for an added natural sweetness and balance between the kiwis and strawberries. I agree with you totally when you stated that it’s “…much more nutritious than most store bought fruit leather and fruit roll ups”. These store bought products contain so many unhealthy ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup, and all sorts of dyes that are so detrimental to ones health. This is especially true for kids who love these kind of treats. So it’s comforting to know that anyone can improve their health and that of their families by making their own healthy homemade snacks using recipes like this.
